Bowflex SelectTech 552 Dumbbells And P90X
If you really want to get the best results when doing P90X you need to have either resistance bands or dumbbells. many people wonder which is going to give them the best workout. It really depends on what your body type or comfort level is like. You have to have at least one or the other when doing P90X but sometimes both is best. But I'm just going to talk about the dumbbells now.
About two Christmas's ago when asked what would I like for a present I really did not know what I wanted. I'm kind of a simple person and don't need a lot to make me happy. I was thinking about a new set of snow skis but I already have 3 sets(although they are all 2-10 years old) and a snowboard. I was in this kick about trying to save money because I really did not have that much and to be honest don't like spending it. I'm not cheap but when I do spend it whatever I purchase must have value to it. I consider the stuff I buy an investment.

So I was watching TV and this infomercial for the Bowflex SelectTech Dumbbells came on. I kept thinking about what a great idea this was. I was remembered about going to the gym and always having to weight for the 25-35 pound dumbbells to get put back while there are about 60 different weights of dumbbells laying around. I mean who uses a 65lb weight to do curls or arm extensions. Nobody that goes to the gyms I go to. Realizing this was one of the best inventions of all time I could see myself working out at home with these weights and the nice rolling stand that they come with.
I decided this was going to be my gift. They are a little pricey for a gift so I decided to go in half with mom. Once we picked the SelectTech Dumbbells up I easily put them together in less than 30 minutes including the stand and started working out. There was a nice little DVD that comes with it too.
All of this is taking place about a year before I even knew about P90X. So when I started doing the P90X workout it was just a perfect fit. Anybody who does P90X will know that when you are working out that you really want to keep up with Tony Horton as best as you can. Sure you can pause and take a break but the goal should be to complete the entire P90X DVD with him. There are a couple workouts, especially P90X Back and Biceps and P90X Shoulders and Arms where you are just grabbing weights and going. The Bowflex SelectTech 552 Dumbbells let you switch the weights from 2.5lbs to 52.5 pounds in the matter of seconds. The technology Bowflex came up with has individual weights that lock into place when turn a dial selecting what weight you want. This is totally a genius idea.
I would highly recommend anybody who is looking to do P90X to look into the Bowflex SelectTech Dumbbells. Even if you are just looking to get rid of some old workout equipment and get some new stuff these dumbbells will make your life that much easier.

My name is Brad Gibala. In 2007 I was introduced to P90X by a friend training for the Marines. I didn't know it at the time but that moment changed my life. Since then I've become a full time

Thanks you for posting this information on P90X. Regarding the dumbells, what size weights do you absolutely have to have to do the program. I prefer to use dumbbells over resistance bands, but the $400 price tag for the bowflex selectech is a bit out of my range. Thanks again for the info.

@ Linda
It really depends. There are some workouts where I use all the weight up to the 52 pounds. For the most part I only use up to 30 pounds. I bought the dumbbells before I started doing P90X. They are so nice because they take up very little space. You don’t have 12 different dumbbells laying around on some gawdy looking rack either. The price seems high but if you compared it with getting a whole set of dumbbells it would be about the same.

The bowflex adjustable weights aren’t bad but the powerblocks are soooo much better. So if anyone is thinking of getting adjustable weights make sure you give powerblocks a try before you make a decision.

any reason you went with the 552s vs the 1090s? thanks!

Price was an issue and there are not that many exercises where I need weight over 55 pounds. The only one I could think of is “lawn mowers.”

Hey Brad I have the P90X DVDs, but want to purchase the Bowflex Selectech Dumbbells.
You said you went with the 552 instead of the 1090 based on the exercises, but which program are you following in the P90X workouts: Classic or Double? Also, were you leaning to tone up, or to bulk up?
Thanks for the information you posted here, its really informative!

I do the P90X Classic Routine as I’m usually busy playing sports or doing some other activity 3 nights a week. The only move I can think of where I’d use more than 55 pounds would be when doing “Lawnmowers.” I can do 15 reps at 55lbs no problem now so I throw in a couple extra reps to get the burn. I was already very lean before doing P90X as I ran a lot so my goal was to tone and bulk up. I’ve put on about 15 pounds of muscle over the 3 rounds of P90X. Ten of those came in the first round.
